Adios, Instituto de Neurociencias
Hoy día me despido del Instituto de
Neurociencias en la Universidad San Francisco de Quito. El Instituto de
Neurociencias es el producto de seis años de mi trabajo, y estoy muy complacido
de que se haya convertido en una “isla de investigación” tan vibrante y
productiva en las ciencias del cerebro. Más importante aún, es un ambiente
amistoso y de apoyo.
Un poco de su historia:
El Instituto creció del original
laboratorio de neuropsicología que yo establecí en el 2014, poco después de
haber llegado como un profesor a tiempo completo en la USFQ. Monté el
laboratorio con dos asistentes de investigación, Marco López y Bernardo Ruales,
y en esos días el laboratorio era simplemente mi oficina. Cuando una experta en
psicofisiología se unió al laboratorio, Dr. Ana Trueba, fue renombrado como
Quito Brain and Behavior Lab, y nos trasladamos a un mejor lugar de trabajo en
el edificio Davinci.
El laboratorio tuvo éxito en publicar
investigaciones en psicología y ciencias del cerebro en importantes revistas, y
muchos estudiantes vinieron buscando experiencia en investigación. El
laboratorio se desarrolló en el Instituto de Neurociencias, que es intercolegial,
oficialmente dentro del Decanato de Investigación e incluye miembros del Colegio
de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades, el Colegio de Ciencias e Ingeniería y la
Escuela de Medicina. Todos los miembros tienen cualificaciones de alto nivel relacionadas
a la neurociencia o han publicado investigaciones en neurociencias.
El éxito del Instituto en números:
4 pasantes han ganado una experiencia
valiosa, Sarahi Ponton es de Ecuador, pero las demás vinieron de Europa para
ganar experiencia de investigación con nosotros. Doenya Amraoui de Holanda,
Christine Bock de Alemania y Emma Mc-Fadden del Reino Unido.
10 financiamientos internos (de la USFQ)
logrando un total de $27,000 para los principales investigadores y un exitoso
financiamiento co-aplicante de $250,000 de NIH.
31 publicaciones en revistas arbitradas y
casi todas ellas son artículos de data (la lista se encuentra al final del
blog).
20 asistentes de investigación (estudiantes
o pasantes) que estuvieron tan involucrados con la investigación que son
co-autores en artículos publicados. Un gran éxito educativo.
25 presentaciones internacionales en
conferencias incluyendo Perú, Japón, Haití, Brasil, Estados Unidos, Alemania,
Holanda, Jamaica, Surinam y el Reino Unido.
49 Brain Meetings, nuestros seminarios
académicos en la USFQ. Estos incluyeron psicólogos y neurocientíficos con un
nivel de PhD, de prestigiosos institutos como la Universidad de Texas, La
Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard, la Universidad de Oxford y
el Centro Nacional Colaborativo para la Salud de Niños y Mujeres del Reino
Unido.
Un último número:
15 es el número de semestres que he trabajo
en la USFQ. Doce como profesor a tiempo completo y tres como un profesor tiempo
parcial. Eso es un largo tiempo y muchos estudiantes. Hoy es mi último día como
director del Instituto de Neurociencias.
Sin embargo, el Instituto continuará. La nueva
directora es la Dr Nergiz Turgut. Ella es profesora de psicología y una
neuropsicóloga clínica. Ella será asistida por Isa Lara, Sol Garcés, Dannys
Rivero y otros miembros del Instituto. Estoy seguro que Nergiz y el equipo
serán capaces de llevar al Instituto a mayores éxitos educativos y de
investigación. Yo seguiré estando involucrado un poco, pero desde lejos. Viviré
en Kazajstán desde el año 2020.
